Chapter Thirty-Six

Stacey was startled as her mobile phone announced a message. She peered out over the duvet cover. It was still dark outside. She was curious and reached for her phone. It was a message from the bank. It indicated a large deposit from WKJD. She stared at the screen, just to make sure she was not dreaming. She read it again. Elation swept over her. She had never imagined such a bank balance, not at this age anyway.

She tried going back to sleep, but could not. After thirty minutes, she opened her laptop, and went onto her electronic banking site. She punched in her passwords, and there it was, the same balance reflected in her account. She gave a whoop of joy and logged out. “Prayers answered,” she said out loud. First light was peeking through the windows, and she decided to go for a long run. She headed out and her mind was racing, adrenaline pumping through her veins, as she pondered the bank transfer and her inflated bank account. She decided to get Prof Khan a small thank-you gift.

While running, she had decided to use the royalties as a deposit towards her own apartment. She would go and look for an apartment over the coming weekend. She showered and headed off to work. Things were definitely on the up.

She arrived at work and was surprised to see Kate there before her. “Hi Kate. How are things going?”

Kate looked up and replied, “Good, thanks, Stacey. Wow, what’s up with that grin?”

She excitedly said, “Well, remember the crowd-sourcing app I told you about? The first royalties hit my bank account this morning. So I guess, I’m really happy. We will definitely have to celebrate with a dinner.”

Kate stared in amazement, “Great. I can’t believe it actually happened. That is so cool.” Kate hovered, hoping to hear how much was transferred, but she offered nothing further. Kate said, “I hope you are not leaving us?”

Stacey smirked, “No, Kate. I am happy with this role, making a difference for our clients. I’m not planning on going anywhere.”

Kate believed her, “Cool. Well done anyway. Don’t forget to invite me for the celebration.”

Stacey struggled to focus on the project at hand; her mind was scrambling over the reality of being able to afford her own apartment. She was tempted to google the property pages, but with her project manager hovering, she thought better of it. She received a call from Daniel, and she agreed to meet him at the Spectre home on Friday evening to assist with the project he had mentioned.

Wilson had also arranged a dinner for the Friday night at home. Stacey arrived to find several cars parked in the driveway, including a catering company’s vehicle. She went in and found Wilson, Daniella, Lizzie, Slade, Daniel and several of the office staff outside on the patio, having a sundowner on the deck. She greeted everyone and moved in next to Slade and held his hand tightly. She became aware of Jackie, staring intently at the two of them.
